The responsibilities of this work study position:

  1. Serve as a representative of Passion Impact, С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ Community-Based Learning, and С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ Federal Work Study
  2. Explore opportunities for community engagement:
    • Find community organizations with volunteer opportunities open to students
    • Explore the volunteer experience, reflect on whether the opportunity could be valuable for С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ students.
    • Find out what students are interested in and assist in identifying volunteer opportunities for them
  3. Outreach to С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ students and staff by sharing information about Community Engagement through:
    • Online volunteer platforms (GivePulse)
    • In Person interactions
      • Tabling on and off-campus (volunteer fairs, community events, weekly tabling schedule)
      • Speaking directly to classes and student organizations (class and club raps)
      • Canvassing on С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ Campuses
    • Following up with students who have expressed an interest in volunteering (i.e., calling, texting, and emailing)
    • Posting blogs, photos, or videos that incorporate your volunteer experiences
  4. Engage in the community with other students:
    • Participate in volunteer events that you have identified for yourself or other students
  5. Assist with program-oriented projects including, but not limited to:
    • Passion Impact events and activities
    • Community-Based Learning events and activities

Qualifications:

  • Awarded Federal Work Study by Financial Aid

In observation of the MLK Day of National Service, Portland State and С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ invite students, faculty, staff, and community members for a day of discussions, skill building, and service honoring and discovering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The event schedule:

Overview of the Day – 3 Sessions
The day will start with Session 1 – community building and educational workshops focused on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After lunch, Session 2 and Session 3 will be opportunities to attend breakout sessions focused on skill building, discussions and/or service opportunities. Service opportunities* will include on campus and off campus options.

Session I: 9am-1:30pm

  • Check In (Coffee and Donuts sponsored by ASС»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½)
  • Community Building and Opening Workshop
  • Lunch (Lunch sponsored by ASС»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½)

Session II: 1:30pm-2:20pm*

  • Service Projects (individual projects will be posted to the Before the Dream group. After your registration has been approved, you will be provided with a special code to sign up for these projects)

DIY Harvest Team

If you’re a passionate fruit picker or a fruit tree owner, here are two ways to get involved with this new PFTP team:

Volunteers needed to get the word out about VISION ZERO!

Portland VISION ZERO team that is working to eliminate all traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets. Our upcoming outreach event will be during the Jade Night Market on Saturday, August 25th from 8:30 – 10:00 PM at SE 82nd Ave & SE Division St. We are actively recruiting volunteers ages 16 years+ to help with this event.

In exchange for your time, I am able to offer each registered volunteer a small gift card as a THANK YOU gift!

The VISION ZERO outreach will take place during the final 1.5 hours of the Jade Night Market community festival that takes place on С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ SE Campus. The outreach event will include volunteers wearing a bright orange safety vest handing out reflective pedestrian safety lights and a VISION ZERO information sheet to people leaving the Jade Night Market on foot at 82nd & Division, people getting on/off the bus at 82nd & Division, and people leaving a С»ÆÃ¨´«Ã½ SE Campus parking lot in a vehicle.

Each volunteer will be supplied with a safety vest, a supply of reflective safety lights, suggested talking points, and the safety information to hand out to people walking on the sidewalk or getting on/off the bus and to people leaving the parking lot in a vehicle.

No experience is needed other than a willingness to hand out transportation safety lights and information. If at any time anyone has any questions about our materials or what we are doing, PBOT staff will be available to answer questions and provide more information. PBOT will have a brief training for everyone involved at 8:30 PM followed by the outreach event.

Are you interested in exploring the regional trail system, getting hands-on experience in survey methods, and learning how data affects policy?

Each September, volunteers from throughout the region gather along trails to count and survey people biking and walking on the Intertwine- the greater Portland region’s systems of trails, parks, and natural areas.

This is a great opportunity for students that want to explore the regional trail system, get hands-on experience in survey methods, and learning how data affects policy.

It is fun and easy, and the data will help provide more choices for people to get around on foot, bike, wheelchairs, and other non-motorized options. The time commitment can be as low as just two hours!

  • Wednesday, September 12th
    • 5:00pm – 7:00pm
  • Thursday, September 13th
    • 5:00pm – 7:00pm
