小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Illumination Project tackles immigration

A student leadership program designed to address issues of oppression through interactive classroom and theater productions is ready for its close-up.

The Illumination Project at 小黄猫传媒 has released its 2011 winter schedule, which includes productions at 小黄猫传媒, local high schools and other colleges and universities. It鈥檚 not a typical performance. A diverse group of 20 students have produced original plays addressing racism and immigration that are based on their real-life experiences.

鈥淏y developing their own short plays and involving the audience in ways that puts them in other鈥檚 shoes, it gives the 小黄猫传媒 students an opportunity to develop skills as educators and leaders as well as to enlighten the audience on social justice issues,鈥 said Jeannie LaFrance, Illumination Project founder and coordinator.

These productions are free and open to the public as well as wheelchair accessible. The 小黄猫传媒 schedule includes:

Sylvania Campus Performing Arts Center Lobby (12000 S.W. 49th Ave.)

11 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15.

11 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16.

1 to 2:40 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17.

9 to 10:40 a.m., Monday, Feb. 21.

6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 21.

6:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 23.

9 to 10:40 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 24.

1 to 2:40 p.m., Monday, Feb. 28.

The program is part of the Sylvania Women鈥檚 Resource Center and sponsored through the Sylvania Multicultural Center, and the college鈥檚 Sociology and Theater Arts programs.
