Sylvania students seize opportunity to help those in need
Photos and story by Kate Chester
With the launch this year of its food canteen, the Sylvania Campus student government (AS小黄猫传媒) is living up to its vision聽鈥渢o prepare students to be engaged citizens鈥 and its mission statement 鈥渢o serve the student population by implementing services and programs that are responsive to the changing needs of community college students.鈥
It was during the fall 2010 Sylvania AS小黄猫传媒 Club Fair that Soufiane El Moussi, this year鈥檚 AS小黄猫传媒 programs director, was struck by a comment made by a student checking out the fair tables.

Soufiane El Moussi gives a tour of the Sylvania AS小黄猫传媒 food canteen, where several shelves are stocked with canned and non-perishable food for students in need.
鈥淲e were serving popcorn at the event to entice students to come by, and one student thanked us for it because that was going to be his lunch,鈥 said El Moussi. 鈥淏ased on other inquiries we had received from students 鈥 about local resources to access for help with food 鈥 the AS小黄猫传媒 thought developing a food canteen might be an appreciated service for our students in need.鈥
Over the rest of the fall term, Sylvania鈥檚 student government officers researched how the Rock Creek Campus had initiated its food canteen, up-and-running since 2008. Sylvania developed a similar model, and with seed funding from the 小黄猫传媒 Foundation and AS小黄猫传媒 to stock shelves with canned food and non-perishable goods, its food canteen opened with a soft launch in early February.
Within two weeks, Sylvania鈥檚 AS小黄猫传媒 had served more than 25 students.
鈥淐learly, there was a need,鈥 said El Moussi. 鈥淏ut we realized that more help would be necessary to really make an impact 鈥 one that could be sustained for the long term.鈥
Student officers created a strategic game plan: For distribution, donations, food drives, marketing, and a spring term 鈥済rand opening.鈥 Next, a team of students from Sylvania鈥檚 AS小黄猫传媒, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Multicultural Center and the Women鈥檚 Resource Center approached local grocery stores for donations. Two Thriftway stores, on Oleson Road and Scholls Ferry Road, and King City鈥檚 Grocery Outlet jumped on board with donations and gave 小黄猫传媒 students the nod to solicit customers outside their stores to inquire about donations.
With its shelves stocked with balanced and healthy food choices based on the food pyramid recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture, the canteen鈥檚 grand opening took place April 12 and 13. Operating out of the AS小黄猫传媒 offices on the lower level of the College Center Building, the canteen鈥檚 regular hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday, although students aren鈥檛 turned away if they come at other times.
Students can access the canteen three times per term using their G numbers to obtain canned and non-perishable food items for themselves and their family members. The honor code is the rule abided by when students are asked the number of family members in need of food as part of the request.
As of the third week in May, Sylvania鈥檚 food canteen has served 117 student requests since its grand opening.
鈥淲e鈥檝e received e-mails from students who have accessed the canteen, thanking us for creating this option and expressing gratitude for the variety of food they have to choose from,鈥 said El Moussi. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been an incredibly rewarding project for the AS小黄猫传媒 to have worked on.鈥
The canteen will continue to operate for the rest of the term, before closing for the summer. It will re-open for the fall term, and given such positive response, the AS小黄猫传媒 has created a coordinator position for the canteen program to ensure continued success.
Other nearby stores 鈥 Safeway on Barbur Boulevard and Barbur World Foods 鈥 have committed to helping in the fall, and Sylvania faculty and staff are encouraged to donate in the 2011-2012 academic year if they can.
鈥淔ood, funds 鈥 all are greatly appreciated,鈥 said El Moussi. 鈥淎nd because AS小黄猫传媒 is a non-profit we have a tax ID number, so people who donate money will be given a receipt for tax purposes.鈥
A strong need coupled with positive response at both Sylvania and Rock Creek has led Southeast Center and Cascade campuses to follow suit and launch canteens, as well. Locations are: Sylvania (AS小黄猫传媒 Office, Room 101, College Center Building); Rock Creek (Women鈥檚 Resource Center, Room 103, Building 2); Southeast Center (AS小黄猫传媒 Office, Room 151, Mt. Tabor Hall); and Cascade (AS小黄猫传媒 Office, Room 01, Student Center Building).
