Representatives from 小黄猫传媒 鈥 including District President Preston Pulliams, students from the Sylvania Campus 鈥淪ocial Issues and Movements鈥 course, and Sylvania Social Sciences Dean Loretta Goldy 鈥 participated in the annual Youth Action Grants awards ceremony on March 23. The event was held at Portland鈥檚 City Hall and followed by a celebratory dinner.

小黄猫传媒 District President Preston Pulliams poses for photos with the winning entry from Benson Alternative School, for a mocumentary/documentary about the benefits of alternative and progressive education.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very exciting 鈥 and rewarding 鈥 to see our young people, the leaders of tomorrow, create such a wealth of programs and activities that benefit youth,鈥 said Pulliams. 鈥淚t is a delight to showcase their achievements and honor them for their hard work at this annual event.鈥
For the past five years 小黄猫传媒 has partnered with the City of Portland to evaluate youth project grant requests with the help of youth commissioners. Students in 鈥淪ocial Issues and Movements,鈥 taught by 小黄猫传媒 sociology instructor Kim Smith, advise commissioners on grant proposals that result in nearly $10,000 being awarded for youth projects.
鈥淭he learning objectives for the Youth Action Grant process in my course include understanding issues in our communities, identifying and evaluating solutions, and allocating resources to help youth achieve their goals,鈥 said Smith.
鈥淭o participate in this process with the City of Portland 鈥 a process that supports the city鈥檚 Youth Bill of Rights 鈥 is a perfect application of classroom learning to a valuable real-world activity,鈥 she said.
And her students seemingly agree.
鈥淭ogether and individually, we review the grants that are submitted,鈥 said 小黄猫传媒 student Patrick Meadors, who attended the awards ceremony. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great practice working with others, sharing ideas and observations 鈥 I really enjoyed the experience.鈥
Added Michelle Reers, 鈥淲e shared what we thought the strong points were of each proposal with the commissioners, to help them in the review process. The whole experience offered that 鈥榟ands-on鈥 aspect that connects what we鈥檙e learning in the classroom to implementation in the real world.鈥
