‘Bioneers’ Sustainability Conference to be ‘Beamed’ at Cascade Oct. 19-21

Members of the С��è��ý community, as well as the general public, will have the opportunity to view and participate in the upcoming “Bioneers” sustainability conference in San Rafael, Calif. – without leaving Portland.

“Beaming Bioneers” – set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 21 in the Moriarty Auditorium at С��è��ý’s Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St. – will allow participants to take part in one of the world’s leading forums on sustainability and ecological responsibility.

“Bioneers brings together social and scientific innovators to address pressing issues in sustainability and social justice that face our culture today,” said Esther Forbyn, student body president at Cascade Campus and one of the event’s organizers.

Each day of Beaming Bioneers will feature the “beaming” portion from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which attendees will be able to see the speakers and presentations from the San Rafael conference. The remainder of each day will be given over to in-person speakers, workshops, and performances, including a performance from the world-renowned Jefferson Dancers (from Jefferson High School in North Portland) at 3:30 p.m. Fri., Oct. 19. Free coffee will be provided throughout the event by Café Mam and the Cherry Sprout Market.

Other speakers and presentations will include the Urban Farming Collective (live and in person at 2 p.m. on Oct. 19); Bill McKibben of 350.org (via simulcast at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20); The ReBuilding Center (live and in person at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20); and Paul Hawken, author of “Natural Capitalism” (via simulcast at 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 21).

This is the first time that Beaming Bioneers will be presented in Portland, said Forbyn.

“Bioneers is expensive to attend in person,” she said, “and most Beaming Bioneers sites charge admission as well. We made an effort to make our event cost-free so that Portland could be part of this important discussion.”
