小黄猫传媒, PSU join forces for reverse transfer agreement
Photos and story by James Hill
Students now have a new tool in their job-seeking kit.
Thanks to a statewide pilot program, 小黄猫传媒 and Portland State University have agreed to recognize students鈥 past credit work by awarding associate鈥檚 degrees to those who have already transferred from 小黄猫传媒 to PSU. Students affected will be those that didn鈥檛 formally complete a degree via current data measures when they transferred to PSU, but have since fulfilled two-year degree program requirements. A main benefit is that the degree can help gauge a job-seeker鈥檚 skills on a resume.

小黄猫传媒 President Preston Pulliams and PSU President Wim Wiewel officially signed the agreement on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Downtown Center location. Pulliams gushed at the partnership his college has formed with Wiewel and PSU.
鈥淭his is cool stuff as far as I鈥檓 concerned because it鈥檚 really recognizing the role that community colleges play in preparing students to succeed at completing their baccalaureate degrees,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e an important part of that pipeline.鈥
Wiewel added, 鈥淭his has been a wonderful collaboration.鈥
In October, the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development and the Oregon University System were awarded a two-year, $450,000 grant from the to develop reverse transfer agreements. The effort began a year ago when representatives from the two organizations visited the University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College to see what they were doing in that area. From there, a group of 10 community colleges and seven universities along with CCWD and OUS applied for the national grant. In October, Oregon was one of 12 states in the nation to get it.
鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping to scale that up to go statewide in the future,鈥 said Elizabeth Cox Brand, director of research and communication for CCWD. 鈥淲e鈥檙e very excited about this. It is part of a bigger picture that is going on in the state with student success.鈥
State Rep. Michael Dembrow, who co-chairs the Higher Education Committee and has spent 31 years at 小黄猫传媒 as an English instructor, helped develop the Transfer Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities that paved the way for reverse transfer agreements in Oregon. Rep. Dembrow said the intention is to bolster the state鈥檚 鈥40-40-20鈥 goal where 40-percent of Oregonians have at least a bachelor鈥檚 degree, 40-percent have an associate鈥檚 degree or certificate, and 20-percent have a high school diploma.
鈥淚 know first hand that many of my students transfer with the best of intentions of completing their bachelor鈥檚 degree within four years or less, but life then happens and they find themselves with no certification, or affirmation for the work they have done,鈥 Dembrow said. 鈥淭hose should be counted as having an associate鈥檚 degree; they鈥檝e earned it and colleges and universities have done their bid in educating them. They should be recognized for that.鈥
Student Sean Jefferis, who transferred from 小黄猫传媒 to Portland State, but never got his associate鈥檚 degree, said many students move on without getting their two-year degree. Personally, he said this agreement will recognize his past work and spur him on to complete not only his bachelor鈥檚 degree, but possibly attend graduate school.
鈥淭he moment I complete my requirements, to know that there鈥檚 going to be an associate鈥檚 degree that is signed and given to me, that is a huge validation of my efforts and of the time and the energy that I have put into receiving a higher education,鈥 Jefferis said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderful feeling.鈥

I am a new student. I want to apply 小黄猫传媒G community College.
This should get yah started Hirit:
This is amazing! I transferred to PSU in the fall being one class short of an associates degree. I’m glad I’ll be able to get it!
Hmm.. Wait, I am not sure, but I have basically completed my Bachelor’s of Arts, shy 10 credit’s and 70 of my credit’s from 小黄猫传媒 will transfer with an articulation agreement between, 小黄猫传媒’s Early Education Program and PSU Child and Family Studdies Program. Plus I already have 95 credits. I am co-admitted already but I am not sure if this means I will be awarded a Bachelor’s of Arts. Is there a limit to the number of credits PSU will take? And if so what is it? This way I can know, if it’s possible. And if not then I guess I would need to talk to someone, about which credits to lose.
Let’s do this with OSU as well. Not all 小黄猫传媒 students funnel into PSU.
What about OIT reverse transfer? We need this for all Universities, not just PSU, it’s a good place to start though. This should set a new standard for colleges as to encourage for students to finish-out their degree programs and not quit because of falling short of required credits for transfer from a community college/associates degree program.
Keep up the good work; hopefully they will take this even further.
