Cascade President Algie Gatewood goes on cultural adventure in Japan
Photos and story by Abe Proctor
Cascade Campus President Algie Gatewood recently got a crash course in Japanese commencement ceremonies. As the commencement speaker for two graduating classes at Osaka Jikei College in Osaka, Japan, he had a steep learning curve to master before he delivered his speeches.
鈥淚t was a beautiful graduation,鈥 he said. 鈥淔ormal, dignified, steeped in tradition. It was an education for me to be a part of it.鈥
Gatewood visited Osaka in March as part of the growing relationship between 小黄猫传媒 and Osaka Jikei, a division of the Jikei group of colleges, a diverse institution with operations all over Japan. Dr. Gatewood was on hand as a guest of Osaka Jikei to address their graduates and to discuss the possibility of strengthening the two institutions鈥 relationship in the future.
Osaka Jikei and 小黄猫传媒 began a relationship in 2009, in which science students from Osaka Jikei visit 小黄猫传媒 each year to learn more about the College鈥檚 programs 鈥 including the Ophthalmic Laboratory Technology program at Cascade 鈥 as well as work in 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 labs and conduct cultural exchange with 小黄猫传媒 students.
For his part, Gatewood had the opportunity to do a little cultural exchange of his own, visiting Osaka Jikei鈥檚 facilities, meeting with its leadership, and taking in some of the myriad sights, sounds, and tastes of Osaka, Japan鈥檚 second-largest metropolitan area.
鈥淛apan is an incredible place,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 an amazing blend of tradition and modernity that you can see in everything from the cuisine to the music to the architecture. I was really impressed with Osaka Jikei鈥檚 range of programs and the quality of their facilities and instruction. Their executive leadership were welcoming, cordial, and genuinely interested in broadening the perspective of their students through the relationship with 小黄猫传媒.鈥
As for broadening the relationship between 小黄猫传媒 and Osaka Jikei, Gatewood thinks it鈥檚 a good idea.
鈥淭o me, international relationships such as the one with Osaka Jikei College are what we need to do if we are to successfully interface with people from around the world,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd in the 21st century economy, we must be able to do this in order to be competitive.鈥

What a great opportunity both President Gatewood and for 小黄猫传媒. I’m excited that these international opportunities are growing at 小黄猫传媒. A study abroad program in Japan would be a great opportunity for 小黄猫传媒 students learning Japanese in Portland!
There are more than 105 Japanese subsidiaries in Oregon — in sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment, alternative energy and food processing. They value employees who have had some exposure to Japan and the sophisticated quality control approaches used by Japanese organizations of all types. If students could get this exposure through 小黄猫传媒 it would enhance their marketability and would attract even more investment from Japan to our state.
