Artist Jesse Hayward to convert North View into visual laboratory

For his 2013 Summer Studio Residency at the Sylvania Campus鈥檚 North View Gallery, artist Jesse Hayward will convert the gallery into a visual laboratory with his installation, 鈥淪ticks & Sage鈥 through Saturday, Sept. 7.
Hayward creates art installations that are intended for direct audience manipulation. Utilizing repetition and ritual, he builds and paints objects in his studio that are then re-imagined through a collaborative, installation practice. This project will take advantage of a deceptively simple technology: the zip-tie. Anyone attending the show will be presented a variety of painted sticks with pre-drilled holes and zip-ties with which to build freestanding structures. Again, direct audience participation will define the outcome of this work.
Hayward will be in the gallery each day of the summer term and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. North View Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
Jesse Hayward received his master鈥檚 degree in fine arts from California College of Art in 2002. His work has been exhibited at PDX Contemporary Art Window Project and Nine Gallery in Portland, and Southern Exposure and Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco, Calif. In 2006, Hayward鈥檚 work was included in the Oregon Biennial at the Portland Art Museum.聽 His collaborative installation at The Art Gym in 2008 was followed up by an audience participation project at PICA鈥檚 Time Based Art in 2009.
