North View Gallery exhibit ‘The Far North: Portrait of the Arctic’ on view through Nov. 7

Sylvania’s North View Gallery this month is featuring the work of visual artist聽Larry Cwik. Traversing the five coastal nations of the Arctic, Cwik has captured the聽ingenuity and challenges of life in this swiftly-changing region.
On view at the gallery聽(Room 214, CT Building) through Nov. 7, Cwik’s photographs were taken in聽remote areas of the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia. The collection includes聽stunning images of this聽foreboding but beautiful place. He聽works聽primarily in photography and drawing, with some occasional work in short films, painting, mixed media and multi-media installations.聽His work captures the themes of mystery, beauty, transfiguration, culture, and surrealism.
Cwik maintains that though the ecology of the Arctic is critically intertwined with the ecology of the planet as a whole, the region remains little-known to outsiders, and聽the stories of the communities who live there go largely untold.
Visitors are invited to an artist talk at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov.5, prior to the聽closing reception, which takes place from 2-4 p.m.聽He’ll聽introduce a new video in the North View Gallery exhibition.聽This project has been supported in part by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
The聽1,900-square-foot North View Gallery features works of art by students, faculty, staff and visiting artists from around the world.
