It wasn鈥檛 until Salvador Casta帽eda toured 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 brand new Swan Island Trades Center that he realized a degree in a field he loves (construction) might be possible for him.
Casta帽eda had just graduated first in his class from Constructing Hope, a free program in Portland that provides people with training in the construction industry. His graduation speech caught the attention of Dan Wenger, the dean of the Arts and Professions Division at the Cascade Campus.
鈥淒an invited me to come to Swan Island for a tour,鈥 Casta帽eda said. 鈥淗e asked if I was interested in any of the classes there. I told him I was interested in all of them.鈥
After the tour, Casta帽eda applied for a scholarship through the 小黄猫传媒 Foundation and he got it.
鈥淚 never thought of myself as the kind of guy who would get a scholarship,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his made the difference for me. Without a scholarship, I never would have been aware of all of the other opportunities waiting for me at 小黄猫传媒.鈥

For 小黄猫传媒 Board Trustee Ken Madden (left) and his family have supported the construction of the new Swan Island Trades Center and created an endowed scholarship for students in the Building Construction Technology Program.
One of the Swan Island Trades Center鈥檚 biggest supporters has been Ken Madden and his family. Madden, who sits on 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Board of Directors, is the owner of , a company that provides temporary tradespeople for contractors throughout the region. His family also owns Madden Fabrication, which is responsible for seismically retrofitting the Crater Lake Lodge, as well as the Portland Loos that dot downtown.
For Madden and his family, supporting the Swan Island Trades Center, as well having created an endowed scholarship for students in the Building Construction Technology Program, is a choice that affects the nation鈥檚 future.
鈥淭hose skills have built our infrastructure,” Madden said. “It鈥檚 substantive and the backbone of the U.S. economy. We see people who have come out of the scholarship system, who didn鈥檛 have the money to learn the trades, talk about their life history and how scholarships have made a big difference in their lives. It鈥檚 very moving.鈥
Now, Casta帽eda, who even as a child took apart small appliances to see how they worked, is progressing toward his associate degree in Building Construction Technology. He鈥檚 also an instructional support technician at Swan Island where he supplies equipment for classrooms and helps students with hands-on problems like identifying which tools to use for their projects, whether its putting together sheet metal or installing HVAC systems.
He鈥檚 eyeing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in electrical engineering in the future, something Wenger has encouraged him to do.
鈥淓lectrical engineering really intrigues me,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely something I want to do. It鈥檚 something I didn鈥檛 even realize would be possible before coming to 小黄猫传媒.鈥

Congratulations my friend Salvador Castaneda you a are my inspirations to continue my program in building constrution design. My friend Salvador Castaneda I want to contact to you if you have any extra time please feel free and lest me know…… have a good day again congratulations
I am so glad to see 小黄猫传媒 and the Swan Island Trade Center making a difference in the lives of their community member like Salvador. The Center has a bright future ahead if it continues this types of initiatives.
I was delighted to see this article because I was employed in an Immigrant and Refugee Center in 2002-2013, where we enrolled and supported students in the Metals Industry. We were around before and at the start-up of the St.John’s 小黄猫传媒 trades facility. I used to teach basic math skills to students who needed to skill-up to succeed in this training at 小黄猫传媒. Plus we provided bus passes or gas money, paid tuition, fees and books for students. Way to go, 小黄猫传媒 Foundation and wish 小黄猫传媒 and Salvador the best future in Welding.
