Longtime desire to assist people leads Nick Minch to rewarding career
Story by Celene Carillo.
For Nick Minch, an accident-prone childhood and a passion for helping others sparked an interest in health care that led him to 小黄猫传媒. As kids growing up in Portland, Minch and his brother (both athletes) were in and out of the emergency room. In addition to more minor injuries, Minch suffered a broken leg and collarbone during his childhood鈥攁nd his brother a broken neck. These experiences cemented Minch鈥檚 respect for the medical profession.
鈥淪eeing the level of care my brother received was incredible,鈥 said Minch, who is now director of the memory care unit at Regency Park. 鈥淚 also grew up in a family of nurses, so part of me always knew I would want to make a career out of caring for others.
Minch earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree聽in Community Health Education at聽Western Oregon University in 2011,聽but needed additional training before聽he could find full-time work in his聽field. He chose the Nursing Assistant聽Training Program through 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Institute聽for Health Care Professionals to聽help him take the next step.
鈥淚 knew 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 program would put聽me on the job market with the skills聽I needed to get hired quickly,鈥 Minch
said.
One of the distinct advantages of聽getting trained as a nursing assistant through 小黄猫传媒 is the pace of the聽program. After completing only 155.5 hours of training, students聽graduate with a certificate of completion and are ready to take the聽Oregon State Board of Nursing鈥檚 competency exam.

Minch recently took a new job as director of the memory care unit at Regency Park, an assisted living facility in Southwest Portland.
“Most students complete this training in two to three聽months,鈥 said Linda Schneider, the director of 小黄猫传媒鈥檚聽CNA program and a longtime RN. 鈥淪tudents graduate聽with the knowledge to not only pass the state exam,聽but to get hired and begin caring for patients immediately.鈥
Student split their time between the classroom and聽skills lab, and clinical practice. At the Glisan Care聽Center, the nursing and rehabilitation facility where聽Minch did his clinical practice, the knowledge he had聽learned in the classroom and in聽labs came together. Minch got聽to know his patients and heard聽their stories, and it affirmed his聽reasons for wanting a career in聽healthcare.
鈥淏eing a nursing assistant is聽more than just taking care of聽people,鈥 Minch said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really about making聽someone鈥檚 day a little brighter. As you start to聽get to know people you learn their preferences,聽you learn how to make them happy.聽Even things as small as having coffee ready聽for people when they wake up goes a long聽way.鈥
After completing the training program and聽earning his CNA certification in 2013, Minch聽was hired at a memory care facility to work as a CNA on the night聽shift. While he enjoyed working directly with residents, he became聽interested in caring for residents and their families from a different聽side: administration.
鈥淚 found that I love being in a position where I can not only provide聽care, but oversee care others provide,鈥 he said.
Minch recently took a new job as director of the memory care unit聽at Regency Park, an assisted living facility in Southwest Portland.聽There, he鈥檚 in charge of everything from staffing to service planning,聽to nurse supervision and meeting with families to make sure聽everyone is comfortable with how their loved one鈥檚 care is going.
And since Regency Park is a long-term care facility, Minch and his聽staff can build strong relationships with the residents.
鈥淚 work with people right now who have dementia. I love hearing聽stories from them and their families, and learning who they were at聽different points in their lives,鈥 he said. 鈥淔orming a bond with residents聽and their loved ones makes it feel like a family.鈥
