Sylvania’s Extra Life gamers raise big cash for Doernbecher Children鈥檚 Hospital

Photos and story by

In November, 小黄猫传媒’s Sylvania Campus raised a record $1,705 for OHSU鈥檚 Doernbecher Children鈥檚 Hospital during 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 fourth annual Extra Life Computer Gaming Marathon.

鈥淚 think the record-setting numbers were due to the gaming marathon being in its fourth year and the eagerness for our community to help the Doernbecher Children鈥檚 Hospital,鈥 said Diane Shingledecker, coordinator of 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Career and Technical Education Community-Based Learning Faculty and leader of the Extra Life event. 鈥淚t鈥檚 now a known and anticipated event at 小黄猫传媒 Sylvania, so that鈥檚 really allowed us to grow. It also supports a great cause and people can easily get behind that.鈥

Extra Life unites thousands of gamers around the world to play games in support of their local Children鈥檚 Miracle Network Hospital. Since its inception in 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $30 million for sick and injured kids.

This year, 小黄猫传媒 hosted 51 participants who logged a combined 236 hours of gaming. Participants played computer games this year and a wide variety of great board and card games. There was also a variety of different 小黄猫传媒 majors who played including students from local high schools, Computer Applications and Office Systems, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Associated Students of 小黄猫传媒 members, faculty and staff.

鈥淲e obviously want to help raise money for the important work that is done at Doernbecher Children鈥檚 Hospital, but Extra Life is more than that,鈥 Shingledecker said. 鈥淚t brings students from many different areas of the campus together 鈥 the academic computer and ESOL departments, International Students, AS小黄猫传媒, gaming clubs, etc. 鈥 with faculty & staff to all work on something that really makes a difference. This really makes all of us feel more a part of the 小黄猫传媒 community and shows students that they all have skills that they can use to help someone else. That鈥檚 really engaging and empowering!鈥
