A long-awaited vision took its early steps toward fruition in September when ground was broken for the new Learning Garden at 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Cascade Campus.
The garden has been the ambition of student leaders at Cascade for more a decade, said Kendi Esary, manager of student life and leadership programs at the campus.
鈥淭he students have wanted this for more than 10 years,鈥 Esary said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really exciting to see it starting to take shape.鈥
The garden will serve both as a source of food for the campus community and as an academic resource, said 小黄猫传媒 Sustainability Manager Briar Schoon.
鈥淔ood insecurity is a big problem for many of our students,鈥 Schoon said. 鈥淭he goal is that the garden will primarily serve students. It鈥檚 difficult to study when you鈥檙e hungry, and research has shown over and over that reducing food insecurity leads to higher retention rates.鈥
The food grown at the Cascade Learning Garden could be distributed to students by way of the campus’ Panther Pantry, or through a farmstand like the one at 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Rock Creek Campus, Schoon said. The garden will model best practices for urban gardening, she said, which are designed to maximize food production in a relatively small space.
鈥淭he garden also serves as a great connection to our curricula,鈥 she continued. 鈥淚t鈥檚 another tool in the toolbox for our faculty, and it will serve as a welcoming space where students can feel connected to the campus and the college community.鈥
She added that the learning gardens at other 小黄猫传媒 campuses are used to enhance the learning experience by instructors from across a range of academic disciplines, from biology and chemistry to poetry and creative writing.
鈥淥ur faculty are really excited to begin integrating the Learning Garden into their curricula,鈥 said the garden鈥檚 supervisor, Alyson Lighthart, dean of the Math & Science Division at Cascade. 鈥淚鈥檝e got instructors from Environmental Science, Biology, General Science 鈥 you name it 鈥 who can鈥檛 wait to get their students in there.鈥
The Cascade Learning Garden represents the completion of one of the goals of 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 overall Climate Action Plan, Schoon said, which is to create learning gardens at all four of the college鈥檚 comprehensive campuses. The Cascade garden joins those already in place at 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Sylvania, Southeast, and Rock Creek campuses, as well as at the College鈥檚 Newberg Center. It is expected to be complete by mid- to late-2019.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a long time coming,鈥 Schoon said.
Congratulations to everyone at Cascade and especially to those champions who have worked on this so doggedly! Huzzah!
