小黄猫传媒 event helps build bridges for Portland’s underrepresented contractors
Story and Photos by Katherine Miller.
It鈥檚 impossible to miss the many cranes looming over downtown Portland, or the new housing and retail projects cropping up all around the metro area. But while these are boom times for the construction industry, contractors who are minorities, women, emerging small businesses or service disabled veterans (MWESBSDV) often face barriers to gaining a share of the opportunity.
As part of its commitment to promote diversity and equitable contracting, 小黄猫传媒 recently hosted a free outreach event for MWESBSDV contractors at its Southeast Campus. The get-together was organized by the college’s Planning and Capital Construction and Facilities Management Services offices.
Some 60 attendees were able to meet face-to-face with industry executives and learn about upcoming contracting opportunities, as well as network with one another. In addition, representatives from several financial institutions were on hand to answer questions.
The 鈥渟peed-dating鈥 format for the evening was designed to be dynamic and enjoyable. Instead of a parade of presentations in front of an audience, attendees had five minutes at a time in which to circulate and 鈥渟ell鈥 their services to prospective general contractors, before moving to the next table to meet another Project Manager.
General contractors at the event included Mortenson Construction, Robert Evans Co., and Lease Crutcher Lewis, as well as representatives from and 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 Small Business Development Center, Facilities Management Services and Planning and Capital Construction. Participating banks were Wells Fargo, Bank of the West, and Beneficial State. Maxximo Insurance was there to address bonding needs.
Organizer Tyrone Henry 鈥 MWESB outreach manager for the Planning and Capital Construction office 鈥 said having key companies present gave small business owners the opportunity to make invaluable connections.
鈥淭his outreach event was huge. Having all the general contractors that have already signed with 小黄猫传媒 to build projects and have them be very open to the idea of working with the college and MWESBSDVs is a big step in the right direction.鈥
Henry explained that minority, women and other small business owners often lack the network of connections that facilitate business for non-MWESBSDV firms. Another barrier is not having the substantial financial resources required to cover payrolls for the industry鈥檚 prevailing wages.
鈥淭he biggest challenge, I would say, is meeting payroll, and getting paid on time,鈥 he said. 鈥淯nfortunately, it’s not uncommon that the general contractor doesn鈥檛 pay on time, and when that happens, you (the subcontractor) still have to continue to pay your people.鈥
At the outreach event, attendees were able to learn about the many projects 小黄猫传媒 is planning under the bond measure approved by voters in 2017. 聽They include some new construction 鈥 such as Cascade Campus鈥 new public safety building 鈥 as well as a long list of work that addresses repairs, renovations, safety improvements and replacing outdated technology and equipment.
Erika Wong, a graphic designer looking to launch her own freelance business, said she found the 鈥渟peed-dating鈥 format of the event useful and fun.
鈥淚 love connecting with people. The romantic speed dating is much more stressful. This is much more casual. It鈥檚 a good format. I鈥檝e met with a couple of the bankers, and they were very helpful.鈥
Neil Lee is an architect who prior to the 2008 recession employed 12 people. He said that after the downturn he changed his business model and now prefers to work by himself. He attended the MWESBSDV event 鈥渕ainly to keep my face in front of people so they know I鈥檓 here.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all about visibility,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 already a MBE/DBE certified business. I already have good banking and insurance relationships. I consult with other small, minority-owned businesses to go after my projects.鈥
Dennis Stone, a long-time owner of a commercial flooring company with six employees, said he participated in the speed-dating because he wanted to learn about MBE/DBE certifications that will allow him to expand his business and do bigger projects.
鈥淢y biggest challenge is getting the bid,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 can do the work, and I鈥檝e done big projects. The money challenge, I think I鈥檝e got that down. The main thing is getting those bids.鈥
小黄猫传媒’s Henry said the response to the outreach event has been gratifying, and that he is seeing progress 鈥 albeit it slow progress 鈥 in diversity hiring.
鈥淲e are definitely getting there, but the good old boy network is still alive and well. So when you鈥檙e able to break through and bring a person who looks like you (a MWESBSDV)鈥 and bring them in at the lucrative MEP level (mechanical, engineering and plumbing) 鈥 that鈥檚 huge.鈥
Plans are underway for another MWESBSDV event at the 小黄猫传媒 Rock Creek Campus on April 23. Read more about 小黄猫传媒鈥檚 contracting opportunities on the college website.
