Details about this class
This course is a combination of online synchronous lecture + on-campus lab.
Consistent attendance and full participation at the scheduled virtual and on-campus times are required for success in the course.
The class will include opportunities to learn in collaboration with others. This working together will help support development of your social learning networks, which is helpful as you proceed through your curriculum.
As in any class students are responsible for completing learning tasks before our (virtual) class meeting and before on-campus lab classes. During class time you will work together to complete activities and assignments. During the scheduled virtual "lecture" times, the instructor will give a lot of feedback as you work, to support your successful learning and success in completing your team work. The same will be true in the lab time on campus.
Exams will be taken on campus during scheduled lab times. You will not be required to come to campus or attend in Zoom outside of the times listed on the class schedule.
You can expect needing a total of 10-13 hours each week to complete assigned work for the class (readings, videos, assignments) outside our class meeting times for synchronous lecture and lab.
LECTURE TEXTBOOK
We will use the Campbell Biology in Focus textbook available through the bookstore. An access code to Mastering Biology is NOT required. You may buy an older edition or a used textbook if you prefer.
Alternatively, you may use this Open Educational Resource biology textbook.
Please note: The Campbell Biology textbook is preferred as it is the source of the course lecture graphics and written content. You can expect the OpenStax text to have different images, diagrams, and wording (while it is still an accurate and reliable text if you choose to go that route).
LAB MANUAL
The OER lab manual is available digitally inside our D2L shell as part of the course materials. A printed copy can be purchased through the bookstore.
WORKLOAD
Learning activities include:
- Practice Lecture quizzes (weekly, in D2L)
- Lecture exams (2 midterm exams, during lab time on campus + final exam, during final exam week, on campus)
- Textbook reading with weekly annotation assignments
-Active-learning (not worksheets) team assignments during Zoom meeting times
- Videos and lecture recordings
- Lab homework (weekly, in D2L)
- Lab quizzes (weekly, in person)
- Lab graphing & scientific method assignment (in D2L)
- Microscope hands-on skills test (in person)
- Microworld project (5 selected specimens will be observed under the microscope, and you will complete a drawing and a facts worksheet for each of them, in person)
ATTENDANCE
The laboratory part of class for this section takes place on campus at Rock Creek.
-Lecture: attendance is required for the full virtual meeting times. The lecture part of class for this section will take place using Zoom and will include a combination of lecture and collaborative, group-based learning.
-Lab: attendance is an important and required part of the course. Failure to participate in the lab activities will severely affect your learning and your grade. Make-up lab work at the Rock Creek campus can be arranged once during the term.
Technology
A microphone is required and webcam is recommended. It is also helpful to have a phone with a camera available for some hands-on assignments such as creating simple drawings or models that you will photograph and paste into team assignments.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
