Details about this class
Each week students will be given a list of the 10-12 plants for the following week’s class. Before we meet for the following week, students will research each plant and fill out their lab notebook according to the minimum guidelines provided.
We’ll meet in the classroom at 8:30 am and review the day’s schedule. Then we’ll go into the field to look at the week’s plants. During our time in the field, two students will be responsible for taking samples of plants. Students will take notes, record their observations and compare the specimen with their research notes. After visiting all the plants, we will return to the lab and two students will set up the samples for review. IMPORTANT NOTE: Each student will be responsible for choosing one plant to review in detail, using their lab notebooks. As a class we’ll come to a consensus on our observations and notes. If you are not prepared, your grade will be affected.
After reviewing the plants, we’ll return to the classroom for a lecture and/or class activity. If we have a scheduled field trip, we’ll depart at this time.
We’ll have several field trips during the term, which are not required, but I really encourage you to attend (we’ll facilitate carpooling). These are opportunities to talk with the owners of several unique gardens that you might not ordinarily have a chance to view. It will help reinforce what we’re studying in class.
The instructor reserves the right to modify course content and/or substitute assignments and learning activities in response to institutional, weather, or class situations.
