MTH – Mathematics Instructor Qualifications
Minimum Instructor Qualifications
- Master鈥檚 degree (MS, MA) in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics; OR
- Master鈥檚 degree in Mathematics Education or Master鈥檚 degree in Teaching (e.g., MST, MAT) with an emphasis in mathematics;
AND Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics;
AND 18 quarter hours (12 semester hours) in graduate level mathematics, OR - Master鈥檚 degree in a field related to mathematics鈥;
AND 27 quarter hours (18 semester hours) in graduate-level mathematics
Demonstrated Competency
for part-time faculty and dual credit instructors may be satisfied by any one of the following, if the above Minimum Instructor Qualifications have not been met:
- Master鈥檚 degree in a field related to mathematics鈥; OR
- For courses numbered 99 and below:
Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education or in Education with an emphasis in mathematics;
AND transcript showing successful completion of a full year of calculus;
AND three years full鈥恡ime (or equivalent cumulative part鈥恡ime) mathematics teaching experience within grade 6 or above
- For MTH 105, MTH 111, MTH 112:
Master鈥檚 degree in Mathematics Education or Master鈥檚 degree in Teaching (MST, MAT) with an emphasis in mathematics
AND Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a subject related to mathematics;鈥
AND transcript showing successful completion of a full year of calculus if the Bachelor’s degree is not in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics;
AND three years full-time (or equivalent cumulative part-time) experience teaching pre-calculus or calculus courses
- For MTH 211, MTH 212, and MTH 213:
Master鈥檚 degree in Mathematics Education
OR (Master鈥檚 degree in Education or Teaching with an emphasis in mathematics
AND three years full鈥恡ime [or equivalent cumulative part鈥恡ime] mathematics teaching experience)
Provisional Approval
- Mathematics graduate students who are actively working on a degree (taking at least 1 credit per year) and have successful completion of at least 27 quarter credits in graduate level mathematics on their transcripts have provisional approval to teach.
鈥“Related fields” include, but are not limited to, Physics and Engineering. The appropriate Division Dean, in consultation with a Mathematics Faculty Department Chair, will make a recommendation to the appropriate DOI about the applicability of a particular degree as a “related field.鈥 As Math Education is handled separately in these qualifications, it is not to be considered a “related field.”
All degrees and transcripts must be from a regionally accredited college or university.
